KIMOCHI, INC.

Akemi Yoshimoto, under leadership of Woman Warrior Sandy Mori, devoted her time to outreach and marketing Kimochi Home and Kimochi programs to San Francisco seniors and specifically to the Japanese-speaking community.  Akemi’s language skills gave her opportunity to present as well as interpret at aging and senior service seminars, help write articles for Hokubei Manichi on care-giving, and translate the Kimochi Home brochure into Japanese all the while learning more about Kimochi’s culturally sensitive philosophy of care and being exposed to both the issues and leadership in the field of aging.

SELF-HELP FOR THE ELDERLY

Woman Warrior Anni Chung, worked closely with staffers, Queenie Lui and Diane Diep, to provide them additional experiences in management, fundraising and advocacy work.  Through her experience, Queenie developed practical leadership skills (including public speaking training) and ‘gained more confidence in my new role as a leader in my unit.’  Diane was also challeged through her mentorship experience and determined that further education (pursuing a master’s in Public Administration) would help her develop into a stronger manager.

 CALIFORNIA HEALTH INITIATIVES, INC.

Ellen Raie Dela Pena and Rosemarie Azeuda took part in Woman Warrior Alice Bulos’ mentorship program which was woven into CHI’s mission for serving uninsured and underserved ethnic immigrants and high-risk youth and adults.

Through their mentorship, these two young women gained a better understanding of their Philippine culture which in turn engendered more self-respect and ‘modesty for who I am.’  Said Rosemarie, “I’ve been influenced by people who want to see me succeed in life and that motivates me to better myself ...and those I care about.”  Ellen, for example, became more politically conscious and used part of her time to encourage Filipino-Americans to register to vote.

NIKKEI COMMUNITY INTERN PROGRAM (NCI)/ JAPANESE AMERICAN SERVICES EAST BAY (JASEB)

In partnership with NCI’s internship program to develop the next generation of community leaders, Kim Nakamura worked under the leadership of Laura Takeuchi, Executive Director of JASEB, to gain greater understanding of the needs of our seniors, learning many aspects of elder care through her JASEB experience and was directly involved in assisting in the organization of three fund-raising projects during her summer internship.
